• The United States and European Union launched the initiative at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland.

The United States and the European Union are promoting the Global Methane Pledge with the goal of reducing global methane emissions by at least 30 percent from 2020 levels by 2030.

Methane is a greenhouse gas whose global warming potential is 28 times greater than that of carbon dioxide (C02). Controlling methane emissions would make it possible to rapidly reduce the rate of global warming. A very important aspect is that it can be implemented through cost-effective and readily available measures while producing significant collateral benefits, including increased agricultural productivity and improved public health.

Therefore, the Mexican government believes it is very important to join this initiative, in order to contribute to the efforts aimed at reducing the emissions that contribute to global warming as a result of human activities. To date, over 100 countries, including Mexico, have joined this initiative that was initially presented in September.

In addition to this proposal, Mexico has joined the Declaration on Forests and Land Use, and prepared the Instrumentation Strategy for a Sustainable Ocean Economy 2021-2024, which 16 countries have joined.  The oceans, in addition to their wealth of resources, are the greatest natural regulators of temperature on the planet.

With these initiatives, Mexico will be contributing in various ways to combating climate change: by reducing emissions and recovering our forests and through sustainable ocean management.

At the  COP26, being held from October 31 to November 12, global climate change governance is being discussed, in addition to global actions to further environmental conservation.
