Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights Martha Delgado yesterday attended Tesla Investor Day 2023 in Austin, Texas on behalf of Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard.
At the event, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that his next Gigafactory will be built in Mexico, in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León.
The new electric vehicle factory, with an investment of five billion dollars, will be the biggest Tesla plant in the world and will create from 5,000 to 6,000 jobs.
Musk said there would be an inauguration ceremony for the opening. He highlighting that the factory "will be supplemental to the output" of other Tesla factories in the U.S., China and Germany, and will contribute to the company's ecosystem for the production of electric cars, among other clean energy storage technologies.
The announcement is the result of 14 months of work by the Foreign Ministry, which began in 2021 with the first contact between Mexican government officials and Tesla. In February 2022, after an initial meeting with Rohan Patel, Tesla Senior Global Director for Public Policy and Business Development, the company formally expressed its interest in exploring options for building an electric vehicle assembly plant in Mexico. Since then, the Foreign Ministry's area for Global Economic Promotion has remained in contact with Tesla, taking the steps needed for the company to build in Mexico and facilitating communication with other government agencies in Mexico and with the state and municipal governments.
