Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and Economy Secretary Graciela Márquez Colín will represent Mexico at the 14th Pacific Alliance Summit to be held on July 5-6 in Lima, Peru.
Also attending the summit will be the Presidents of Chile, Sebastián Piñera; Colombia, Iván Duque Márquez; and Peru, Martin Vizcarra Cornejo, who is also the pro tem president of the Alliance. The participants will assess the progress made over the last year since the Puerto Vallarta Summit held on July 23-24, 2018, and decide on actions for the 2019-2020 period.
As part of the Summit, on July 5, the presidents and representatives of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru will close the 6th Business Forum, which aims to reflect on the Alliance's role in global integration.
The Alliance presidents and Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard will meet with President Lenin Moreno, as Ecuador would like to become an Associate State, and with representatives of the Alliance's Business Council, which will present its report of the last year and make recommendations on trade facilitation. In addition, it was agreed begin negotiating terms of reference with South Korea so that it can become an Associate State.
Prior to the Summit, Foreign Secretary Ebrard will take part in the meeting of the Pacific Alliance Council of Ministers, together with the finance ministers and with candidates for Associated States. He will also participate in a discussion of Foreign Ministers and Observer States on cooperation as a tool for contributing effectively to the Sustainable Development Goals and the new role of the Pacific Alliance. Based on the Alliance's portfolio of projects, specific cooperation proposals and initiatives will be identified in areas that contribute to the Alliance's goal of integration. Priority will be given to the projects with the highest social impact.
For Mexico, it is of the utmost importance to consolidate the Pacific Alliance. The priority given to establishing economic exchanges with the region is reflected in the 2019-2024 National Development Plan. This priority status can be seen in the fact that eight years after the Alliance's creation, during the meeting of the Council of Ministers, the anniversary was commemorated by inaugurating the Pacific Alliance Park in Mexico City in May 2019.
The Pacific Alliance is a regional integration initiative made up of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. It was created on April 28, 2011 to promote the free movement of people, goods, capital and services. Together, the member countries have a population of about 225 million, and a GDP of more than 2 trillion dollars, or 35% of that of Latin America and the Caribbean, which would make it the ninth largest economy in the world. Its four member countries account for 59% of Latin America and the Caribbean's trade with the world.
