Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and Economy Secretary Graciela Márquez attended the 14th Pacific Alliance Summit on behalf of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The Summit was held from July 1-6 in Lima and was also headed by the presidents of Chile, Sebastián Piñera; Colombia, Iván Duque; and Peru, Martín Vizcarra.
The four countries signed the Lima Declaration, which includes a progress report on the Alliance’s activities since last year's Summit in Puerto Vallarta; a presidential declaration on the sustainable management of plastics that calls for inclusive sustainable development in the member countries; and a declaration in support of the multilateral trade system.
The group also approved the Strategic Vision 2030 Work Plan, a roadmap for the Alliance for the next eleven years. Ecuador and Korea were accepted as new candidates for associate status and the group committed to concluding trade negotiations with the four current candidates: Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Singapore.
The delegation heads met with Ecuador's President Lenin Moreno, who explained the advantages of giving associate status to Ecuador and reiterated his interest in a closer relationship.
They also met with the Alliance Business Council (CEAP), where they agreed on the importance of greater integration, as well as voluntary standards for the sustainable and efficient use of water.
Another important outcome of the Summit was the entry into force of the Cooperation Fund and Council. The Council is comprised by the cooperation agencies of the four countries, which will help them to be more effective in implementing cooperation projects with the Observer States.
Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Armenia and the Philippines were accepted as new Observer States, bringing the total to 59.
Peru, the pro tempore president (PPT), reported on the year's activities before handing off the PPT to Chile for the coming year.
