President Enrique Peña Nieto today received Lars Løkke Rasmussen, currently on an official visit to Mexico, at the National Palace.

In a joint press statement, the Mexican president said that tomorrow, in the port of Lázaro Cárdenas, together with the Prime Minister of Denmark, he will open, “A major investment by a Danish company, the Maersk Container Terminal , involving over 7.3 billion pesos”.

This shows that Mexico is a reliable destination; Mexico inspires other countries to set up business here or expand their businesses in our country,” he added.

President Peña Nieto stressed that the visit by Danish Prime Minister, “Confirms the interest in investing in Mexico, and of Danish companies in continuing to invest and grow in our country”.

After expressing his gratitude, “For the confidence Danish companies have expressed  in our country,” the Mexican president said that "Denmark is Mexico's second largest trading partner among the Scandinavian nations,” adding that there are approximately 230 Danish companies in our country.

Peña Nieto President and Prime Minister Løkke Rasmussen signed a Joint Declaration which, “Confirms the desire of both countries to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in three aspects”:

FIRST: “Political dialogue, to deal with challenges in the world order, causes of mankind in which we have a shared agenda”:

SECOND: “Boosting trade and investment. Mexico is currently in the process of renegotiation of the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, and Denmark is one of the countries that has supported and endorsed this process of updating the framework of the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Mexico”.

THIRD: Intensifying bilateral cooperation, “In the hope that this relationship between two countries, with a longstanding relationship in the diplomatic arena, can, through this cooperation, open up spaces to promote development and prosperity for our societies."

The Mexican president said that in his conversation with the Danish Prime Minister, they discussed the commitment both countries have to a shared agenda, as well as, “The policies that we adopt, and the exchange of information on topics such as health, energy and the environment”. He added that this makes it possible, through successful experiences, “To strengthen the public policies the Mexican government has adopted to address these matters”.

He mentioned that in the working meeting he held with Prime Minister Løkke Rasmussen, the progress of the agreements signed in the state visit he made to Denmark last year was reviewed.

In less than a year, collaboration programs, information exchange and dialogue between experts on health, energy and the environment have been successfully strengthened. He highlighted the establishment of the Program on Energy and Climate Change Mitigation for the period 2017-2020, which aims to strengthen Mexico's capacities in this field, as well as the opening of the new Specialized Center for Diabetes Management in Iztapalapa.

President Peña Nieto and Prime Minister Løkke Rasmussen also witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation in the areas of Agriculture, Food and between the Mexican Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food and the Danish Ministry of Environment and Food.

MEXICO AND DENMARK AGREE ON THE IMPORTANCE OF FREE TRADE; WE LAUNCHED A STRATEGIC PLAN BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES TO EXPAND COOPERATION: Lars Løkke Rasmussen

Prime Minister of Denmark Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that during the talks he held with the President of Mexico, the two leaders agreed on the importance of free trade, and he declared that his country supports the modernization of the agreement between Mexico and the European Union, currently under renegotiation.

He said that Denmark wishes to increase trade with Mexico: “I would like to see more Danish investment in Mexico and I invite Mexican companies to invest more in Denmark”. He said that both countries “Have very similar views on many bilateral, regional and global issues, and I really believe we will have more cooperation as a result in the coming years”.

He said that this visit is an important first step in that direction, noting that through the Joint Declaration the two leaders signed today, “We decided to launch a strategic plan between the two countries”: A plan that, “Is much more than just words and consists of many concrete actions and we want to keep it that way”.

The Danish prime minister said that the Joint Declaration identifies several areas in which cooperation will increase in the future, such as health, energy, and climate change mitigation; “We are eager to continue these exchanges,” he said.

He added that today,  “We decided to go beyond this cooperation to cover agriculture and food issues,” through the formalization of a Memorandum of Understanding on this issue, as a result of which Denmark, “Will strengthen its work at the Embassy here in Mexico to increase cooperation in these issues”. He said that they also agreed to expand cooperation in the maritime sector in the future.

Løkke Rasmussen recalled that this year, Mexico and Denmark celebrate 190 years of diplomatic relations, “I can confidently say, after what we discussed today, that relations between Mexico and Denmark have never been better,” he said.
