President Enrique Peña Nieto attended the state funeral of Fidel Castro.

He told Mexicans:

“We express our commitment to continuing to accompany Cuba and its people, as friends, as we have always done, in its historic march towards a more inclusive and prosperous society.

We recognize the steps they have taken towards a country that is more economically and politically open”: EPN

In 2014, during the CELAC Summit in Cuba, President Peña Nieto met with Fidel Castro, and paid an Official Visit to that country.

“Since then, Cuba and Mexico have been building a large, modern agenda, which was consolidated through President Raúl Castro’s state visit to Mexico in November, and which we will continue on the basis of our strong bonds of friendship”: EPN
