Relations between Mexico - Cuba are currently going through an excellent phase following the relaunch initiated by the two governments in November 2013. Here are 10 key facts about these relations:
1. The relaunch of relations between Mexico and Cuba coincides with the intensification of the project to update the economic and social model, promoted by President Raúl Castro in his country.
2. Mexico has informed the Cuban Government of its willingness to support the project of updating the economic and social model.
3. The bilateral legal framework was updated with the signing of 9 agreements during Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla’s visit to Mexico in November 2013.
4. On January 29, 2014, President Enrique Peña Nieto paid a state visit to Cuba at the end of the Second Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
5. In May 2014, a Business Mission was sent to Cuba, with 68 Mexican businessmen representing 48 companies.
6. Foreign Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu paid an official visit to Cuba on October 19, in which she discussed issues on the bilateral agenda.
7. Cuba is Mexico’s third largest trading partner in the Caribbean. In 2014, trade totaled $374 million USD.
8. Since the reopening of the ProMéxico Commercial Office in May 2014, there has been an increase in trade and a marked interest by Mexican companies in trading and investing in Cuba.
9. Mexico remains the eighth largest sender of tourists to Cuba; between January tand June 2015, 45,000 Mexicans were sent to Cuba.
10. During November 2015, Mexico will participate in the International Fair of Havana with about 50 companies.
