The National Anthem, like the flag and the national coat of arms, forms part of Mexico’s patriotic symbols.

The words of the National Anthem were composed by Francisco González Bocanegra, a native of San Luis Potosi, while the musical arrangements were produced by Jaime Nunó, a Catalan musician and conductor of military bands.

The first time the National Anthem was heard at the Santa Ana Theater, it was performed by an Italian opera company in Mexico, conducted by Giovanni Bottesini, and sung by tenor Lorenzo Salvi and soprano Claudia Florenti.

The words and music of the national anthem, authenticated by the three branches of government, are deposited by constitutional mandate in the Archivo General de la Nación, the National Library and the National History Museum.
