• Tenth Mexico - Egypt meeting for political consultations

The Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Carmen Moreno, traveled to Cairo on June 20-21 for meetings with government officials and the League of Arab States.

Egypt is an important actor in the international system, with special importance in its region and in various global issues.  Its strategic position and the fact that it belongs to both Africa and the Middle East make it a natural bridge between the two regions. In addition, it has influence and a leadership role in the League of Arab States, which is based in Cairo.

The 10th Mexico-Egypt meeting for political consultations was held on June 21, co-chaired by Undersecretary Moreno and Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister for the Americas, Mahy Abdellatif.

The two delegations reviewed the bilateral priorities and held a fruitful dialogue on regional and global issues, in which shared priorities were identified for the multilateral forums. They stressed that, for the first time, there are Mexican and Egyptian companies present in both countries.

The officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Matías Romero Institute and the Diplomatic Academy of Egypt to promote bilateral cooperation in diplomatic research and training.

During her trip, Undersecretary Moreno visited Egypt's New Administrative Capital (NAC),  an infrastructure project to transform 1,700 square kilometers of desert into a cutting-edge, sustainable urban center with government, diplomatic, cultural and financial districts, where the tallest building in Africa is being built.

In order to promote Mexican authors and the history of Mexico, Undersecretary Moreno donated two collections of Mexican novels and copies of the Compact History of Mexico to the New Administrative Capital Library, all translated into Arabic.

On June 20, the Undersecretary visited the League of Arab States and, during the periodic high-level consultations with the regional organization, met with the Assistant Secretary-General for Arab Affairs and National Security, Khalil Al Thawadi.

The two officials agreed on a cooperation project for a public policy study aimed at finding opportunities for collaboration and improving relations between Mexico and the countries of the Arab world.

Undersecretary Moreno also met with Amr Moussa, former Foreign Minister of Egypt and former Secretary-General of the Arab League, with whom she discussed regional events.

The relationship between Mexico and Egypt began in 1905 when Mexico opened an Honorary Consulate in Alexandria to meet the needs of Mexican ships using the Suez Canal, which opened to navigation in 1869. Mexico and Egypt established diplomatic relations on March 31, 1958, and in 1960 embassies were opened in both capitals.
