• Beginning on Monday, July 25, third-generation consular ID cards will be issued at the Mexican consulates in Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Miami.
  • The third-generation consular ID cards use state-of-the-art technology, and include new security measures and additional information to increase their acceptance.  Holders can select the gender neutral "X" as a marker or leave the gender designation blank.
  • The new ID cards will be available at all Mexican consular offices in the United States, Spain and Costa Rica by end-September 2022.

Following up on the announcement made by Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard at the Mexican consulate in Los Angeles on June 9, the Foreign Ministry reports that the new third-generation consular ID cards will be issued starting Monday, July 25, 2022 at the consulates of Mexico in Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, Little Rock, Los Angeles and Miami.

In August, the new ID cards will be phased in at the Mexican consular offices in Albuquerque, Austin, Boise, Brownsville, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, El Paso, Philadelphia, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Laredo, Mc Allen, Milwaukee, New York, Omaha, Orlando, Phoenix, Portland, Raleigh, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Saint Paul, Santa Ana, Seattle, and Tucson.

Subsequently, the Mexican representations in Barcelona, Boston, Calexico, Costa Rica, Del Rio, Douglas, Eagle Pass, Madrid, Fresno, Nogales, New Orleans, Oxnard, Presidio, Washington and Yuma will begin to issue third-generation consular ID cards throughout September.

The new third-generation consular ID cards use the latest technological advances, which make them virtually unforgeable. It also includes information such as eye and hair color, height and weight and, for minors, the names of their fathers, mothers and/or guardians.  These features will provide more certainty about the user's identity and increase acceptance of the consular ID cards as an identity document.

In line with the inclusive policies introduced by the Foreign Ministry, for the first time, individuals who do not identify with the masculine or feminine gender can select the gender neutral "X" as a marker or choose for no gender marker to be visible on the printed card.

With the new third-generation consular ID card, the Foreign Ministry continues to modernize the services offered by its consular network and to ensure the inclusion of all Mexicans abroad regardless of their sex or gender.
