• Aiming for legal, orderly and safe migration, Mexican officials provided the migrants with information.

Mexico's ambassador to Guatemala, Luis Manuel López Moreno, and officials from our National Migration Institute, met today in Guatemala City with Honduran citizens who are taking part in the Migrant Caravan.

The meeting was organized by Guatemalan government officials. Guatemala's Deputy Foreign Minister Pablo García and the Honduran ambassador in Guatemala also participated.

The tone of the meeting was respectful. Reliable and current information was provided on the Mexican government’s requirements for allowing migrants to enter Mexico in a regular fashion, and for those wishing to apply for refugee status. It was also made clear that there is no such thing as a transit visa for those wishing to cross Mexico to reach its northern border.

The migrants were also informed of the serious risks posed by irregular entry into the country, particularly that of migrant smuggling and human trafficking networks, which is why, as noted in the joint press release issued today by the Foreign and Interior Ministries, the Mexican government will rescue migrants who enter the country in an irregular manner and process them administratively in order to ensure their safe and orderly return to their country of origin.

The government of Mexico reiterates that its migration policy respects the human rights of all migrants and international humanitarian law, and recognizes the right of freedom of movement of persons and the right of any individual to seek refugee status. In this context, it will remain in direct communication with the various groups that make up the caravan of Honduran migrants so that they have all the information they need to make informed decisions and to exercise their rights.
