• At the COP26 in Glasgow, Mexico joined the pledge to halt and reverse deforestation and land degradation.

Mexico today formally joined the Declaration on Forests and Land Use issued at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference being held in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. The declaration has been signed by over 100 countries.

In the declaration, world leaders pledge to work together to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030, while promoting sustainable development and inclusive rural transformation. In the declaration, the leaders also pledge to:

            - Conserve forests and other terrestrial ecosystems

            - Reduce vulnerability, build resilience and enhance rural livelihoods

            - Redesign agricultural policies

            - Promote food security

The declaration launch ceremony was led by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who said that the first signatory countries represented about 85% of the world's forests. More nations are expected to sign in the coming days, such as the 15, including Mexico, that signed today.

During the ceremony, contributions for 19.2 billion dollars in private and public funds to finance the pledge were announced. In addition, the signatory countries undertake to maintain their commitments under the Paris Agreement.

At COP26, being held from October 31 to November 12, global climate change governance is being discussed, in addition to global actions to further environmental conservation.
