In 2021, Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin institutionalized the relationship between Mexico and Suriname, agreeing to regular consultations to promote a more ambitious bilateral agenda. The priority given to these meetings by the two officials is a sign of the good relationship between both countries.

At the first meeting on April 20, the Surinamese delegation was led by Miriam Mac Intosh, Permanent Secretary at the Foreign Ministry for International Business and International Cooperation. The Mexican delegation was led by the Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean, Maximiliano Reyes.

To open the meeting, the Mexican delegation warmly welcomed the Surinamese delegation, saying that the meeting represented an opportunity to strengthen the dialogue between the two countries, which for almost 48 years have developed a number of shared interests. Mexico's foreign policy towards the Caribbean is one of its current priorities.

The delegations reaffirmed the interest of the two governments in continuing to consolidate the close and mutually beneficial relationship, by increasing technical and economic cooperation, trade and investment, and maintaining a fluid political dialogue. The Surinamese delegation thanked their Mexican counterparts for the invitation to participate in the High-Level Meeting for Agrifood Integration in Latin America and the Caribbean to be held on May 6-7 in Cancun, Mexico.

The officials said that the regular political consultations were an opportunity to highlight the excellent state of the bilateral relationship, create a cooperation program and coordinate matters of mutual interest at the regional level. They recognized their many areas of agreement on the global agenda, which has allowed them to move forward together on several consensual decisions at the multilateral level.

Both delegations agreed to hold their next meeting as part of the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations in November 2025, an occasion that will serve to continue strengthening the strong ties of friendship and cooperation between Mexico and Suriname.
