• It will be open to the public until October 20 at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Spain.
  • The exhibition is part of the art collection of the Andrade Group Foundation and Heraldo Media Group.

The inaugural ceremony, held today at the Cultural Institute of Mexico in Spain, located at the Mexican Embassy in Madrid, was attended by Mexico’s ambassador to Spain, Quirino Ordaz Coppel; the President of the Board of Trustees of the Andrade Group Foundation and Vice President of Social and Cultural Relations of Heraldo Media Group, María Cristina Mieres Zimmermann; and Emiliano Gironella Parra, the Mexican artist whose works are being displayed.

"Reality and Wonder: 500 years after the Moctezuma-Cortés encounter" consists of 30 monotype prints on paper by artist Emiliano Gironella, in which he reflects on the encounter between Moctezuma and Hernán Cortés from two different angles, using contemporary language and mixed techniques. The works on display are part of the art collection of the Andrade Group Foundation and Heraldo Media Group.

In his introductory text to the exhibition, curator Víctor Mendiola writes, "Our understanding of these two figures is not only an understanding of a war, or of the fundamental characteristics of the Novo-Hispanic world, but also an understanding of the conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries, and of the authentic and original solution that Mexicans found for creating a modern nation."

"Reality and Wonder: 500 years after the Moctezuma-Cortés encounter" will be open to the public from Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., from September 21-October 20, 2023, at the Cultural Institute of Mexico in Spain, Carrera de San Jerónimo 46, Madrid.
