Foreign Secretary Alicia Bárcena concluded her trip to Havana, Cuba, where she participated in the G77+China Summit on the Challenges of Development: Role of Science, Technology and Innovation.

On behalf of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Foreign Secretary Bárcena highlighted the affection and strong ties of friendship, fraternity and solidarity that unite the peoples of Mexico and Cuba. She recognized the importance of the Group of 77 plus China as a multilateral forum that brings together two thirds of the United Nations member states and 80 percent of the world's population.

Secretary Bárcena highlighted the work of the G77+China on the issues of combating poverty, South-South cooperation, climate change, technology and innovation, the 2030 Agenda and proposals for development financing.

"This is, Mr. Chairman, our place, and with enthusiasm and excitement I would like to inform you that we are considering, if the Group agrees, rejoining the discussions and work of the G77. In order to build a better, more egalitarian, just and sustainable world, we must speak with one voice on issues that concern us all, about South-South cooperation on crucial issues," she said.

Foreign Secretary Bárcena also inaugurated a new Mexican consulate in Havana, which will be able to serve up to 2,000 people per month.

She was accompanied by Ambassador Miguel Díaz Reynoso, Consul Ignacio Cabrera Fernández, and Foreign Ministry officials.

This new consulate responds to the need to modernize the attention given to Mexican nationals living in Cuba, and to optimize the services provided to Cuban and foreign individuals in Cuba that need to carry out consular procedures.

The new consulate will make it possible to improve the assistance given to the Mexican community and will fulfill Mexico's commitment to regular, orderly and safe migration, a priority issue for Mexico and Cuba.

"You can see that they have done a beautiful and very necessary job here at the consulate. This is appreciated, I believe, by people in general, not only the Mexicans in Cuba, but also by Cubans and other nationalities who want to visit our country,” she said.

With these acts, Mexico reaffirms the historic ties of cooperation that have existed over 121 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations between the two countries.
