• Foreign Secretary Bárcena travels to the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Korea at the instruction of President López Obrador to seek supplies for the victims of Hurricane Otis in Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez.

At the instruction of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Foreign Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra has begun a trip to the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Korea at the head of a delegation seeking household goods, appliances and basic necessities for the victims of Hurricane Otis in Guerrero. The delegation includes Defense Ministry officials.

In order to purchase home appliance packages in the People's Republic of China, and to strengthen and deepen the bilateral political dialogue, Foreign Secretary Bárcena will meet with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs; Trade; the National Development and Reform Commission; and the business community in China. In the Republic of Korea, she will meet with senior officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the business community and the Mexican community.

Secretary Bárcena’s visit reaffirms the importance Mexico attaches to its relationship with both China and the Republic of Korea. It also follows up on the agreements reached during the meeting between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Chinese President Xi Jinping, and the meeting between Foreign Secretary Bárcena and Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum Leaders' Meeting in San Francisco last November.

Mexico and the People's Republic of China commemorated the 10th anniversary of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership this year, while Mexico and the Republic of Korea maintain a solid and dynamic relationship, based on shared visions and important economic and trade ties, which have been strengthened in recent years.

China is Mexico's second largest trading partner worldwide and is first in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2022, Mexico exported $10.918 billion dollars to China (1.89%) and imported $118.697 billion dollars (19.6%). Between 1999 and 2023, Mexico has received a total of $2.575 billion dollars in foreign direct investment from China. Our bilateral trade is mainly focused on the manufacturing, automotive, technology, electrical and mining industries.

In 2022, Korea was Mexico's third largest trading partner worldwide and the second largest among Asia-Pacific countries. In 2022, the figures reached $7.376 billion dollars (1.28%) in exports and $22.489 billion dollars (3.72%) in imports. Between 1999 and 2023, Mexico has received 10.17 billion dollars from Korea. Bilateral trade is concentrated in the automotive, electricity and technology sectors, in addition to research and development.
