The Foreign Ministry reports that it summoned Venezuelan Ambassador María Lourdes Urbaneja Durant today to convey to her the Mexican government's position on the elections held in Venezuela on May 20.

During the meeting, which follows up on the statements made by both the Lima Group and the Foreign Ministry on May 21, the Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean, Luis Alfonso de Alba, reiterated to the Venezuelan diplomat that Mexico does not recognize the legitimacy of the election because it does not comply with international standards for a democratic, free, fair and transparent process.

He also informed her of the specific measures that Mexico would take to downgrade its diplomatic relationship with the Venezuelan government, including reducing or cancelling cultural and cooperation activities, including military cooperation.

Lastly, he said that the Mexican Foreign Ministry would remain alert to developments in Venezuela and would continue use diplomatic means to seek to contribute both bilaterally and multilaterally to restoring democratic institutions, respect for human rights and the full exercise of the rule of law in Venezuela.
