At this morning's press conference led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard reported that, with the arrival this Thursday of 1.2 million vaccine doses donated by Moderna, Inc., Mexico will soon have received 202 million doses in total.  Between January 8 and 10, 1.5 million more doses will arrive.

"This is the first donation we have received directly from a U.S. company to the Mexican government," he said, thanking Moderna and saying that the vaccines would be shipped with the assistance of the Direct Relief organization.

The Foreign Secretary said that the contracts negotiated by Mexico to ensure the timely access of vaccines have concluded. "The Cansino contract ended in November, and the AstraZeneca and Pfizer [contracts], in December. We still have as a reserve [...] the commitments that Covax made with Mexico, which are already long overdue, but we hope that they will be met in the coming weeks."

Lastly, Secretary Ebrard said that 354,971 vaccines were given in 2021 in the U.S. with the assistance of Mexico's consular network. "1,834 vaccination days were carried out as per the President's instructions to assist the Mexican citizens in the United States," he concluded.

The Foreign Ministry reaffirms its interest in and commitment to strengthening international cooperation to contribute to universal, timely and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.
