- Senators from all political parties applauded the careers of the foreign secretary and her officials.
- The foreign secretary and undersecretaries for Latin America and the Caribbean, and Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, were sworn in by the Senate.
Today, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, and the Undersecretaries for Latin America and the Caribbean, Laura Elena Carrillo Cubillas, and Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Joel Antonio Hernández García, were confirmed in their positions and sworn in by the Mexican Senate.
The officials were confirmed after the senators had discussed and voted on the appointments, which had been approved unanimously the night before by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Senators from all parties, the Plural Group and senators without a party all highlighted the Foreign Secretary's career, experience, sensitivity and abilities, saying she was the ideal person to lead the Foreign Ministry.
After her confirmation, Secretary Bárcena said she was happy and committed to conducting a consensual foreign policy.
“I feel very honored to have been unanimously confirmed because I am convinced that foreign policy is a State policy and, as such, it must have the consensus of the Chamber of Deputies and Senators—in this case, Senators—because we do not represent only a part of the country, we represent all the voices of Mexico. For me, it is a great honor and a huge commitment to have been confirmed by all of the senators," she said.
The Foreign Secretary's work plan for the next 12 months will be based on the following:
-Inclusive diplomacy that is close to and at the service of the people
-Consistent diplomacy
-Forceful diplomacy, and
-Diplomacy that is committed to Mexico's transformation
The goal is to better serve the Mexican diaspora, follow Mexico's foreign policy principles and strengthen the country's sovereignty, among others.
