Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard met today at the Mexican Foreign Ministry with Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Park Jin. The meeting, which contributed to strengthening the bilateral relationship, took place during Minister Park's first visit to Mexico. It follows Secretary Ebrard's visit to Seoul last July.
The two officials welcomed the deepening of the political dialogue and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Strategic Partnership for Mutual Prosperity established in 2005 to ensure that the relationship reaches its full potential in all areas. Mexico and the Republic of Korea established diplomatic relations more than 61 years ago.
They highlighted the importance of the growth in bilateral trade and investment, especially the participation of Korean companies in important infrastructure projects in Mexico, such as the Dos Bocas Refinery in Tabasco, and they agreed to continue promoting bilateral economic ties.
They agreed to deepen technical-scientific and educational-cultural cooperation through the upcoming meeting of the Joint Committees, and to collaboration on health and aerospace matters.
Lastly, Secretary Ebrard and Minister Park exchanged views on regional and global issues of common interest. They agreed to intensify their joint work in multilateral forums such as the G20 and MIKTA (made up of Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Türkiye and Australia), in order to capitalize on the broad areas of agreement between both countries.
South Korea is Mexico's 3th-ranked trading partner worldwide, and is 2nd in the Asia-Pacific region. Bilateral trade in 2022 totalled USD$27.7 billion. Globally, it is the 13th source of foreign direct investment in our country, with 2,059 Korean companies in Mexico.
