Foreign Secretary Alicia Bárcena is in New York this week to participate in the 78th UN General Assembly on behalf of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The Foreign Secretary will take part in the 2023 SDG Summit and the general debate, with more than 160 heads of State and foreign ministers from around the world.

She will also hold bilateral meetings with her counterparts and participate in meetings to advance Mexico's international agenda.

The opening segment of the SDG Summit began today at 9:00 a.m. local time in New York. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reported that only 15% of the Sustainable Development Goals are being worked on, but many others are going backwards, which is why he urgently stressed the need for a rescue plan.

The Foreign Secretary took part in the inauguration and plenary meeting of the SDG Summit, accompanied by the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Joel Hernández, the Undersecretary for Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economy, Alejandro Encinas Nájera, the Director General of Global Issues, Camila Zepeda, and officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Economy.

At the conference, Mexico pledged to take and accelerate transformative actions to advance the SDGs in a comprehensive and inclusive manner, to strengthen multilateralism and create synergies that benefit both people and the planet.
