The phrase "An example of life," perfectly describes Norberto, a 27-year-old man, from the state of Morelos in Mexico, who after being close to die because a motorcycle accident, is now a productive man and an outstanding Paralympic athlete.
This is another case of success of the excellent medical care provided by Mexico´s General Hospital "Dr. Eduardo Liceaga "* (HGM by its initials in Spanish), said the Director General of this hospital, Dr. César Athie Gutierrez, at a press conference to publicize the story of Jonathan Norberto Gomez Roman.
He explained that on December 20, 2014 the young man had an accident on his motorcycle, being hit by a vehicle in the Federal Highway Cuernavaca-Cuautla, (in the State of Morelos, in Mexico), so he was taken to Cuernavaca´s General Hospital where he was diagnosed with open fractures of tibia and fibula in his left leg, so as ligament and neurological damage of the left arm.
Given this situation, and in order to provide comprehensive care, nine days later-December 29, 2014- he was transferred to HGM, where he was admitted to the Intensive Therapy service, for subsequently be valued at the services of Vascular Surgery and Orthopedics.
Dr. Maria del Carmen Garcia Ruiz, Orthopedics specialist, explained that the patient had a progressive decrease in sensitivity and mobility of the leg, caused by an irreversible ischemia thrombosis of the artery, so the only alternative treatment was amputation.
Then, he said, he was involved in the Orthopedics, in order to perform a surgery on his left arm to correct the fragmented fracture that he had and the reconstruction of the ligaments of the elbow, as well as neurological release, which was successful.
He was discharged on January 18, 2015, and began physical therapy and rehabilitation. Six months later, he practiced swimming as part of physical therapy, because he had a left pelvic phantom pain.
To regain muscle strength, the young man decided to practice wheelchair basketball, discus throw, shot and javelin. Now at day, he participates in different national swimming competitions, where he has achieved excellent results.
With the support of the HGM, Norberto Gómez Roman obtained a prosthetic left leg, through which he managed to integrate into his daily life, since he is the father of two small children of six and three years old.
Finally, the Chief of Orthopedics, Dr. Anastasio Lopez Valero, said that in the last five years has increased the number of patients with this type of fractures for motorcycle accident, so he reiterated the need to create a culture of prevention.
