Almost 30 years have passed since that July 21, 1988, when the first heart transplant was carried out in Mexico. According to data from the National Center for Transplants (CENATRA by its initials in Spanish), during 2016 there were 34 heart transplants and a total of 1986 donations of organs and tissues from deceased persons.

However, despite the great progress there is still much to be done to strengthen organ donation and transplantation. One of the strategies to do this is multi organ donation, which consists of using several of the organs of the body of a single donor to benefit more than one patient in need of transplantation.

For the second time during this 2017, a multidisciplinary group of the General Hospital of Chilpancingo, Guerrero in Mexico coordinated the multiple donation of organs made by the family of a young man of 27 years, who died in a car accident.

In order to use the donated organs, teams of surgeons from different parts of the country went to the Hospital of Chilpancingo, with the support of helicopters of the Attorney General's Office, as well as a private plane coordinated by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation and National Coordination of the National Transplant Center.

The donated organs were transferred to different hospitals to perform the corresponding transplants: the heart to the Ignacio Chávez National Institute of Cardiology, the kidneys to the General Hospital of Mexico and the lungs to a Hospital in Nuevo Leon.

Thanks to the logistics of distribution and transfer of the organs, carried out by the State Transplant Center of the state of Guerrero and the National Coordination of CENATRA, four patients whose survival depended on an organ were able to enjoy good health again.

The donation of organs is a sublime act; it represents much of the best of the human being.
