Chronic kidney disease, especially caused by diabetes, is one of the greatest challenges for the country's health system. The magnitude of this condition is so high that Mexico is among the first places in the world of deaths and healthy life years lost due to chronic kidney disease due to diabetes, according to estimates from the Global Burden of Illness study.

This is not a problem unique in Mexico. Figures from a meta-analysis published in 2016, estimate that between 11% and 13% of the world population is affected by chronic kidney disease, mainly in stage 3.

What to do about it?

  • The specialists agree on the importance of prevention and the promotion of habits that contribute to kidney health.
  • Healthy eating habits since childhood are fundamental in the primary prevention of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity, leading causes of kidney failure.
