• The good relations between the two countries, particularly the economic and political ties, are strengthened

Mexico City, March 12, 2024.- This morning, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his wife, Beatriz Gutiérrez Mueller, received King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden at the National Palace. Their Majesties will be in Mexico from 12-14 and will engage in activities that reaffirm the good political and economic relations between the two countries.

At the morning press conference, the President of Mexico reported that, after the reception, there would be private events with the Swedish monarchs at the National Palace:

“We are going to exchange opinions; they want to talk with us. They are very interested in what is being done in the cultural sphere; they are going to go to the Mayan region.  We [with Beatriz] are going to have lunch with the king and queen; we are going to be accompanied by the Foreign Secretary [Alicia Bárcena Ibarra], and a delegation is coming because the king is the head of state.

“We are very pleased that the king has decided to come to Mexico as head of state; heads of state, presidents, prime ministers are welcome.

“We are going to invite the king and queen to visit the Diego [Rivera] murals; they asked for that, as well. They are intelligent, educated, generous monarchs; they are our visitors and we are going to take care of them.”

He noted that Mexico is very well positioned in the world; for example, Mexico City is one of the 10 best places to visit, and our country is receiving tourists and foreign investment like never before.

After the private meeting, the President offered the Swedish king and queen a guided tour of the murals in the National Palace; they also held a working lunch.

Earlier in the day, the monarchs visited the Obelisk to the Niños Héroes, where King Carl XVI Gustaf laid a wreath at the monument.

The visit of the monarchs also includes business and cooperation aspects. Their agenda in Mexico City includes a visit to the Senate and the inauguration of the first Mexico-Sweden Business Forum, which will serve to promote trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.

In addition, King Carl XVI Gustaf will inaugurate the new offices of Ericsson, a company that has operated for more than 120 years in our country.

The king and queen will then travel to Merida, Yucatan, accompanied by the Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Johan Forssell, and a delegation that includes 35 business executives.

This is the third state visit of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia to Mexico; their previous trips were in 1982 and 2002.

Mexico and Sweden formalized diplomatic relations on July 29, 1885.
