• Under the leadership of President Enrique Peña Nieto, the reforms that were required were processed and the foundations of a modern, more competitive Mexico have been laid, he said.
  • The ideals and principles of the Servant of the Nation have made Mexico a nation of institutions: Alfredo del Mazo

President Enrique Peña Nieto led the ceremony commemorating the 202nd anniversary of the death of General José María Morelos y Pavón.

Representatives of the Legislative and Judicial branches, members of the presidential cabinet, governor of the State of Mexico, Alfredo del Mazo Maza, and members of the presidential staff attended the anniversary of the death of the Servant of the Nation.

In the House of Morelos, Secretary of Health José Narro Robles, who delivered the official speech, said that , “Today is a day of mourning, homage and evocation, it is a day of mourning because on a day like today, Friday December 22, 1815, Don José María Morelos y Pavón was shot dead”.

He explained that, “With the calm objectivity time provides, today we reaffirm that the values of the Servant of the Nation are still the beacon that guides Mexicans”.

He said that, “With The Sentiments of the Nation, and with his invitation and work to organize the Congress of Anáhuac that drew up the Constitution of Apatzingán, he became the sculptor of the republic and the leading architect of our nationality”.

He declared that, “Today as always, Mexico faces problems; they are not, however, the most serious or the most complex ones we have had to face”.

He added that, “Today, as always, our Nation will pull through. The solution will be simpler if we are united and do our part, if we maintain our adherence to principles, if we are able to build from diversity, if we respect what the generations that preceded us achieved, if we accept Savater’s idea that progress is as much innovation as preserving what has been obtained and if we put aside the call to confront, divide and destroy.

Narro Robles thanked the president of Mexico for, “His work, tenacity and consistent effort, and in particular, the clarity of his vision and the achievements obtained”.

He said that, “In recent years, under the leadership of President Enrique Peña Nieto, the reforms that were required have been processed, the foundations have been laid for a modern, more competitive Mexico, and we have gained recognition and trust abroad”.

This ceremony, he said, “Is a good opportunity to remember that the purpose of politics is to serve rather than to serve one’s own interests”. He said that, “Those who see in politics the path to achieve personal ambitions, who use whatever methods they can to achieve their objectives, who seek to eliminate their rivals, and who think that they are the only ones telling the truth and confuse ends and means are mistaken”.

He noted that, “Success and happiness do not require merely accumulating material goods, far less sacrificing human ethics and solidarity to achieve the brevity of the insubstantial”.

Governor of the State of Mexico Alfredo del Mazo Maza said that the ideals and principles of the Servant of the Nation have made Mexico a nation of institutions. "Today, under the leadership of a great man from the State of Mexico, President Enrique Peña Nieto, Mexicans have made it our purpose to make our nation the nation of laws, rights and freedoms that inspired Morelos,” he added.

He explained that the president, “Works by following the example and teachings of Morelos, with a commitment to social affairs, respect for the law and a commitment to the effort of making our institutions strong, modern institutions, and making Mexico a country Morelos dreamed of: a fair, united country, of rights and freedoms, that gives every Mexican the opportunity to realize their dreams and achieve their goals”.

The governor of the State of Mexico thanked the President of Mexico for the support provided by the Federal Forces, “To meet the main demand of Mexicans, which is to restore security in the State of Mexico”. He added that through joint actions, we will achieve the results society demands, and together we will restore peace and calm in our state.

At the end, the president mounted a solemn honor guard in front of the mask of Morelos and laid a wreath, while the taps were sounded and the national anthem was sung. Lastly, the president signed the distinguished visitors’ book.
