On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry welcomes commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21 and reiterates its firm commitment to eliminate all forms of discrimination that undermine human dignity and are intended to impair or nullify the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The Foreign Ministry will continue to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, including that related to migration, and believes this to be a priority for the international community.

We are currently witnessing more and more expressions of xenophobia and discrimination against vulnerable groups, particularly migrants and their families. These words and actions threaten the progress made over the last decades on the rights of the marginalized and vulnerable.

The Mexican government is firmly convinced of the many economic, social and cultural benefits of international migration for both the countries of origin and destination.

In 1966, the UN General Assembly proclaimed March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, to which Mexico has been a party since 1975, commits the States Parties to “pursue by all appropriate means, a policy of eliminating racial discrimination and to engage in no act or practice of racial discrimination against persons, groups of persons or institutions and to ensure that all public authorities act in conformity with this obligation.”
