President Enrique Peña Nieto inaugurated the Integradora Sukarne Lucero Agropark in the state of Durango. Mexico is the world’s seventh largest animal protein producer. According to the FAO, it is the sixth leading beef producer and exports 1.1 million head of cattle annually.

Mexico is a country that is now a food producing power; it is a country that is growing and also becoming a leading food exporter.”

The “Integradora Sukarne Lucero” Agropark is Mexico’s largest meat producing and processing complex and one of the world’s most dynamic and modern ones. It is a very important project in Mexico’s primary sector and agricultural activities.

Nearly 10 billion pesos were invested, and 6,000 jobs were created for Coahuila and Durango and business opportunities were created for over 18,000 farmers and ranchers.

Production of 800,000 head of cattle per year, which will become 240 thousand tons of meat, will be achieved. Sixty-five per cent of its production will be for export, mainly to the United States and Canada (30%), Asia (15%) and Europe (10%).

Performance of the agri-food sector

· In 2015, agricultural exports exceeded $26 billion USD, 4% more than in 2014 and 17% more than in 2012. This amount exceeds that of remittances ($24.792 billion USD), oil exports (23.432 billion USD) and foreign exchange from international tourism ($17,457 billion USD).

·  Thus, for the first time in 20 years, the agricultural and fisheries trade balance achieved a surplus of 1.617 billion USD.

· INEGI published information on the performance of the economy in January of this year and reported that January is a month in which economic activity grew at an annual rate of 2.9 percent from January 2015 to January 2016.

·  Activity in the food sector has grown by 4.3 per cent, more than the average rate of the economy.

·  That same month, agri-food exports exceeded $ 2bn, one of the highest figures for the beginning of the year, in the last two decades.

"The meat that will be consumed in Mexico, much of the meat that will be produced in this park and processed in this AgroPark will be for the international market, but a lot will also be for the domestic market.

Between 15 and 17 percent of the meat to be sold in our country will come from this AgroPark.”
