·        This achievement is a result of the coordination of our Armed Forces, the Mexican Army and Navy, the Federal Police, the Attorney General’s Office and the Center for Investigation and National Security, he said.

Following the re-capture of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, earlier today, in the National Palace courtyard, President Enrique Peña Nieto issued a press statement, the contents of which are reproduced below:

“This morning, in the city of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, members of the government’s security institutions arrested Joaquín Guzmán Loera.

His location, tracking and recapture are the result of the joint work of the Mexican state’s intelligence, security and law enforcement corporations.

This is an achievement in favor of the rule of law, resulting from the coordination of our Armed Forces, the Mexican Army and Navy, the Federal Police, the Attorney General’s Office and the Center for Investigation and National Security, he said.

“This action against impunity is the result of the ongoing work of valuable elements of our institutions, who, for days and nights, focused on the mission with which I tasked them: recapturing this criminal and bringing him to justice.

To each and every one of them, I express my institutional and personal gratitude.

I express the gratitude of the whole of Mexico; they are a source of pride for our nation.

This arrest, as I promised, was bound to happen. For months, intense, careful intelligence work and criminal investigation were carried out, which led to the identification, arrest and dismantling of the network of influence and protection of this criminal.

Today, Mexico confirms that its institutions have the skills to confront and overcome those who threaten the tranquility of Mexican families.

This achievement shows that when Mexicans are united, no adversity is impossible to overcome and all goals are attainable if we trust the soundness and strength of our institutions.

This operation means that 98 of  the 122 most wanted criminals no longer pose a threat to Mexican society; they were criminals who had been harming the country for years.

We continue to deal with organized crime with intelligence, coordination, strength and effectiveness. We will continue to do our duty, because we have the support of millions of Mexicans who wish to live in a country of laws and freedoms.

Today’s arrest is therefore extremely important for the government’s security institutions.

Today, our institutions have shown once again that citizens can trust them, that our institutions measure up and that they have the strength and determination to fulfill any mission entrusted to them.

Faced with major national challenges, Mexicans have a firm government determined to build a better country.

Today, once again, we have proved that there is no greater strength than the strength of Mexicans working together.

Once again, from the National Palace, I congratulate and thank all the staff, all the elements of all the security institutions in our country who participated in the recapture of this criminal we were looking for.

And I would like to ask the directors of the institutions who are here to convey my congratulations and appreciation to those who participated in this operation. Mexico is very proud of them all.

Thank you. Good afternoon,“
