In a press statement, President Enrique Peña Nieto said today that the recent gas price increase in the country, “Is a responsible measure consistent with what I have defined is a priority for my Government: preserving the stability of our country’s economy”.

The president explained that the cost of failing to prioritize our economic stability would be even greater and much more painful and expensive than the measure that has been taken”.

He went on to say: "There is no greater cost to society than the failure to ensure the stability of our economy, which is why we must all assume the challenge of this adjustment in order to move on”.

He explained that the gas price increase, “Is not the result of energy reform or tax reform or a tax increase. Instead, it is a responsible, consistent measure in this government’s priority to preserve the stability of the country’s economy”.

He explained that it was not an easy decision to adopt this measure. He called for society’s understanding and asked it to listen to, “The motives and reasons the government has given for this decision”.

He also urged society to understand the reasons for the measure, “And adjust to this situation which is not imposed by an internal matter. World events, and gas prices around the world have led us to take this decision, which is consistent with the purpose and priority of preserving the stability of our economy”.

The president went on to say: As president, I understand the annoyance and anger that exists among the general population and various sectors of our society. I hear the annoyance that accompanies the adoption of this measure”.

He added: "I know it is difficult to assume, but it is precisely to protect families’ economies, which would be seriously affected if we did not take these measures”.

President Peña Nieto announced that the government, “Is working to determine measures to support the most vulnerable sectors of our population”.

He added that, “The government will continue to meet with various sectors of society to explain, dialogue, and above all find ways to ensure that the most vulnerable groups receive some form of support from the government”.

He said that, “The government will not permit abuses by those who use this as an excuse to commit violations and implement unjustified price increases”.
