U.S. Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo today concluded a visit to Mexico, where he held a meeting to discuss the main issues of the bilateral relationship.  The two delegations had a cordial discussion that led to positive results for both countries.

Regarding migration, Secretary Pompeo acknowledged the significant progress made by Mexico in fulfilling the agreement reached between both countries on June 7 in Washington, D.C.

Secretary Ebrard indicated that, due to the progress that had been made, he did not believe it necessary to begin any type of negotiation on the possibility of a Safe Third Country Agreement between Mexico and the United States. The Foreign Secretary also noted that the strategy to ensure orderly, safe and regular migration would continue for the next 45 days.

Secretary Ebrard underscored the concern of the Government of Mexico regarding the tariffs imposed on Mexican tomatoes, saying that they have a negative impact on more than one million jobs in Mexico.

He suggested the creation of a binational group to recover the property and assets of Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, and asked that the United States Government launch an operation together with the Government of Mexico to curb trafficking in the illegal weapons that enter Mexico at the San Diego -Tijuana, El Paso - Ciudad Juárez, Laredo - Nuevo Laredo, McAllen - Reynosa and Brownsville - Matamoros ports of entry. These are five strategic points where this type of transfer that is linked to the insecurity indexes in Mexico could be stopped.

Lastly, Secretary Ebrard asked Secretary Pompeo to reinstate the Repatriation Program (IRI) that assisted with the repatriation of Mexican citizens from the United States and was suspended in 2018.

Foreign Secretary Ebrard thanked Secretary Pompeo for his visit and welcomed the excellent communication between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United States Department of State.
