•    The Mexican Government has formally requested a report on the alleged negligent practices in immigration detention centers.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Consulates General of Mexico in Atlanta and El Paso, follows up on alleged human rights violations in immigration detention centers under the supervision of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) in Irwin, Georgia and El Paso, Texas, respectively.

The Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta maintains communication with the organization that denounced a series of unauthorized hysterectomies in Spanish-speaking women. Said surgeries, according to the first reports not yet corroborated, would have been carried out without full consent and under the custody of ICE authorities in Irwin, Georgia. The Consulate has requested detailed information from the authorities in order to clarify the possibility of said surgeries being performed in Mexican citizens, as well as information on the procedures carried out and its corresponding justification. The Government of Mexico will promptly follow up through its various diplomatic and legal instruments to fully understand what happened.

Regarding the allegations of sexual abuse against a Mexican citizen by ICE agents in El Paso, Texas, the Consulate of Mexico in that city maintains contact with the alleged victim and her lawyer to provide her with all the necessary consular support.

Both consulates are in communication with the U.S. authorities to clarify the facts and identify Mexican people who may have been affected. In addition, consular personnel from both representations reinforce the attention to nationals in these detention centers to guarantee that the rights of Mexican detainees are respected.

The Ministry of Foreign Relations reiterates its commitment to the protection of Mexicans abroad, as well as its principles of a feminist foreign policy. The Government of Mexico expresses its absolute rejection of any violation of the human rights of Mexican people abroad.
