On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry congratulates Senator Gabriela Cuevas Barrón for her election as President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for the 2018-2020 term.

Senator Cuevas won a large majority of the votes (287 of 361) in today's election held during the IPU assembly in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Mexican Senator is the second woman to preside over this organization in its 128 years of existence.

Her election is an acknowledgment of parliamentary diplomacy and a success for the Mexican legislature, especially the Senate.

The presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate formally presented Senator Cuevas' candidacy on May 22.  The IPU was founded in 1889 and is made up of 173 Member Parliaments.
