In a plenary session today led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the General Health Council (CSG) declared a national health emergency due to force majeure as a result of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (Covid-19) epidemic.

The Council agreed on exceptional measures for the entire national territory, including the immediate suspension of nonessential activities for the public and private sectors and all of society from March 30 to April 30 in order to reduce the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the community, and to reduce the burden of disease, its complications and the number of deaths from COVID-19 in the Mexican population.

The Council asked the federal agencies and all federal, state and local agencies involved to help make the declaration a success by taking the necessary measures as part of a coordinated strategy that is in line with the values and commitments of the current administration.

The Government of Mexico reiterates to all Mexicans the need to abstain from activities outside of their homes, to keep a healthy distance away from others and to follow basic hygiene measures in order to avoid a greater number of infections.
