On instructions from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Secretary Alicia Bárcena traveled to Caracas to meet today with President Nicolás Maduro, who confirmed his attendance at the “Encuentro por una Vecindad Fraternal y con Bienestar" (Meeting for a Fraternal Neighborhood with Wellbeing) to be held in Palenque, Chiapas on October 22. Both officials agreed on the importance of maintaining a frank dialogue with the other invited countries to better face the enormous challenges posed by human mobility, while focusing on development and on addressing its structural causes.
On behalf of the Government of Mexico, Foreign Secretary Bárcena welcomed the decision of the Government and Unitary Platform of Venezuela to resume the dialogue and negotiations agreed in Mexico in 2021. Mexico will take part in the session to be held tomorrow, October 17, in Barbados, and reaffirmed its commitment to continue facilitating the dialogue, convinced of its benefits for the Venezuelan people.
The Foreign Secretary also held meetings with various Venezuelan authorities. The officials agreed on the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the areas of economic reactivation and energy self-sufficiency, among others. The Secretary was accompanied at these meetings by the Mexican ambassador to Venezuela, Leopoldo De Gyves de la Cruz, and the Directors General of American Regional Organizations, and South America, Efraín Guadarrama Pérez and Pablo Monroy Conesa.
Lastly, the Secretary met with other sectors of Venezuelan society and reviewed the needs of our embassy in Caracas to continue providing the best possible service to the Mexican community in that country.
