Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray: Good afternoon. I'm going to be speaking in Spanish. Michael, welcome.

Welcome, and welcome to the entire United States delegation from the State Department. And a special welcome to Mr. Jared Kushner, Special Advisor to President Trump.

It is an honor for Mexico's Foreign Ministry to have you here with us this afternoon. I also welcome Mexico's ambassador to the United States, Mr. Jerónimo Gutiérrez.

Today, as you all know, Secretary Pompeo, accompanied by Treasury Secretary Mnuchin, Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen, Mr. Jared Kushner, and a large delegation of senior U.S. government officials, met in the official residence of Los Pinos with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

The climate of the meeting was one of great respect between both governments. It was also a very warm meeting, a meeting between teams who know each other, who have spent a lot of time together, working to strengthen the relationship and friendship between our countries.

During the meeting in Los Pinos, the President reaffirmed to Secretary Pompeo and the U.S. delegation his own and his administration's commitment to continue working until the last day of his term in November of this year to strengthen the relationship, particularly with regarding the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The President reiterated the desire and commitment of the Mexican government and his administration to continue working at an accelerated pace on the successful renegotiation of the treaty as soon as possible.

In addition, the President spoke with Secretary Pompeo and the rest of the delegation about the great concern in Mexico for the children who have been separated from their parents at the border and he asked Secretary Pompeo, Secretary Nielsen and the rest of the delegation to make every effort to quickly reunite them with their families.

In general, the meeting was, I repeat, a constructive one and useful for continuing to make progress on bilateral issues.  I would like to reiterate that President Enrique Peña Nieto has agreed with the virtual President-elect of Mexico, Mr. Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to work together as a united front for Mexico, and that is how we are working with regard to the relationship with the United States.

This is the time to join together for Mexico.  We will work in close coordination with Mr. López Obrador's team on the Free Trade Agreement and on all aspects of the bilateral relationship.

It is President Enrique Peña Nieto's responsibility to fulfill his mandate until November 30 and he will do so, but he will do so in close communication with Mr. López Obrador's team as they have agreed, and this is what we have told Secretary Pompeo and his delegation.  This is a defining moment in the relationship between Mexico and the United States, but it is also a moment of great opportunity. President Enrique Peña Nieto and his team will put all our efforts and dedication into capitalizing on this opportunity for the good of Mexico, the United States and this great region that is North America.

Again, Mr. Secretary, it is a privilege to have you and your entire delegation here.  You are, as always, very welcome here.
