The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that the President of Argentina, Alberto Ángel Fernández, will make an official visit to Mexico from February 22-24 at the invitation of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador as a special guest at the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Promulgation of the Plan of Iguala and Flag Day on February 24 in Guerrero.

President Fernández's visit to Mexico is the first by a sitting president of Argentina in almost a decade, and the first by a foreign head of state to commemorate "2021, Year of Independence," organized by the Presidential commission for the commemoration of Mexico's historical events and figures.

During President Fernández's stay, the two leaders will meet privately at the National Palace to discuss the main issues on the bilateral, regional and multilateral agendas. They will also discuss the two countries’ historic collaboration on producing, packaging and distributing COVID-19 vaccines, and the creation of the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency. Both initiatives arose from Mexico's 2020-2021 Work Program as President Pro Tempore of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac).

In addition, President Fernández will be declared a Distinguished Guest of Mexico City and the Senate will hold a formal session in his honor. On February 24, he will take part in commemorating the Bicentennial of the Promulgation of the Plan of Iguala and Flag Day.

The institutional relationship between Mexico and Argentina marked its 132nd anniversary last December. The two countries signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement in 2007, as well as Economic Complementation Agreements numbers 6 and 55 on trade issues.

The visit of the President of Argentina to Mexico is evidence of the partnership forged in November 2019 when, as president-elect, he traveled to Mexico on his first trip abroad after his electoral victory.
