The Government of Mexico regrets the decision of the United States to apply Title III of the Helms-Burton Act for the first time ever. Beginning on May 2, this will enable US citizens to file lawsuits against companies that make use of properties confiscated after the 1959 Cuban Revolution.
This may affect foreign companies doing business in and with Cuba. The Mexican government will protect Mexican companies that do business or have an interest in doing business with Cuba that could be affected.
As it has done historically, Mexico rejects the unilateral application of extraterritorial trade legislation, as it violates the norms of international law.
Mexico reaffirms its support for an end to the economic and trade embargo against Cuba.
