The Government of Mexico opposes the order issued today by Texas Governor Greg Abbott authorizing the Texas National Guard and state police to apprehend undocumented migrants and return them to border crossings to be processed by immigration authorities.
In the United States, the federal government is exclusively responsible for enforcing immigration law, which is why our dialogue on the issue takes place at that level. Therefore, this action can only be understood as part of the electoral campaigns in Texas.
The Government of Mexico reiterates its commitment to protecting the rights of Mexicans abroad. The Foreign Ministry, through its network of consulates in Texas, will be ready to respond to any violation of these rights by state authorities.
