• A trilateral meeting was held to review the progress of the commitments made at the 9th North American Leaders' Summit (NALS).
  • The next NALS will take place in Mexico late this year.

The sherpas—technical coordinators and pillar managers—of Mexico, United States and Canada met this afternoon to discuss regional issues, review the agreements reached at the 9th North American Leaders' Summit (NALS) that took place in Washington, D.C. and to follow up on the meeting of North American foreign ministers held during the Summit of the Americas on June 10 in Los Angeles, California with the participation of Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, Canadian Minister Mélanie Joly and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

During the meeting, the sherpas gave an overview of the key regional issues, including COVID-19 and public health security; supply chains, SMEs and innovation; environment and climate change; racial justice, diversity and inclusion; orderly, safe and regular migration; and security. They also conducted a trilateral analysis of potential areas of opportunity and the best ways to collaborate on finalizing the agreements.

Half a year after the last North American Leaders' Summit, the officials exchanged views on Mexico's future work as organizer of the forum, which will be held late this year, and on the transition of leadership from the United States to our country. The three nations reiterated the significant areas of agreement that exist in the region and the importance of the NALS for continuing to advance together in facing the great current hemispheric and global challenges.

The Mexican delegation was headed by Chief Officer for North America Roberto Velasco; the United States delegation was headed by Isabel Rioja-Scott, Director for North America on the National Security Council; and the Canadian delegation was led by Michael Grant, Assistant Deputy Minister for the Americas for Global Affairs Canada.  Also participating for Mexico were officials from the Ministries of Health, Economy, and Environment.
