As part of Mexico's bilateral cooperation with the United States, Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Rosa Icela Rodríguez, met today with U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The meeting is part of the ongoing high-level dialogue between both nations to make joint progress towards orderly, safe and regular migration.

The main goal of the meeting was to reaffirm the desire of both administrations to cooperate on protecting the rights of migrants and for migration that complies with the legislation of both countries.

Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez highlighted the joint work done by both nations to exchange information that improves the security of the region.  Secretary Ebrard emphasized Mexico's desire to cooperate on migration together with the countries of the region. He also expressed appreciation for the shipment from the United States of 1.35 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to help facilitate trade and tourism between the two countries.

At the meeting, they discussed both administrations' shared vision of addressing the causes of migration. They also discussed the vision of both governments for tackling the challenges of migration at both the multilateral and regional levels.

The Mexican delegation included the heads of the Foreign Ministry, Marcelo Ebrard; and the Security and Citizen Protection Ministry, Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez; National Migration Institute Commissioner Francisco Garduño; National Guard Commander, General Luis Rodríguez Bucio; the Head of the North America Unit, Roberto Velasco; Chief of the Naval Intelligence Unit, Vice Admiral Alfredo Hernández; Foreign Ministry Legal Counsel Alejandro Celorio; SSPC Chief of Staff Iván Escalante; General Oscar Renteria from the Defense Ministry; and the INM Director General of Representative Offices, Héctor Martínez.

The U.S. delegation was made up of the Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas; Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. embassy in Mexico, John Creamer; Senior Director for Transborder Issues at the National Security Council, Katie Tobin; Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary for International Affairs, Serena Hoy; DHS Assistant Secretary for Border and Immigration Policy, David Shahoulian; DHS Senior Counselor Samantha Vinograd; Counselor to the DHS Secretary, Isabella Ulloa; DHS Press Secretary Marsha Espinoza; and DHS attaché at the U.S. embassy in Mexico, Edgar Ramírez.
