On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry expresses its deep concern about reports of an alleged chemical weapons attack on April 7, 2018 in Douma, Syria that has left about 70 civilians dead, including women and children.

The Mexican government reiterates its strong condemnation of the use of chemical weapons by any actor for any reason in violation of international law and international humanitarian law.

If the attack is confirmed by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the UN Security Council, it would be a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, human rights and the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The Mexican government will remain alert to the OPCW and Security Council follow-up on this issue.
