As part of the economic and trade relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other regions, and to attract investment, trade and tourism, the Mexican government and the president of the Confederation of Industrial Chambers of Mexico (Concamin), Francisco Cervantes, announced Mexico's participation in Expo 2020 Dubai.

The World Expo will take place from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This is the first world expo to be held in the region comprised of the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. The theme will be "Connecting Minds and Creating the Future" and 25 million visitors are expected at the expo, in which more than 190 countries will participate.

Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard led the event attended by the Secretaries of Economy, Tatiana Clouthier; Culture, Alejandra Frausto; and Tourism, Miguel Torruco;  the Foreign Ministry's Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs, Martha Delgado; and the UAE ambassador in Mexico, Ahmed Almenhali.

Secretary Ebrard said that Mexico's participation shows that the Mexican government is working effectively with the private sector to promote the country's economy throughout the world. He said, "Resolve, decisiveness and perseverance always triumph and if we work together, the public sector and the private sector, we are successful."

The Foreign Secretary also said that, although it is true that the federal government does not have abundant financial resources, it does have many public resources of other types and that, in collaboration with the private sector, all that is needed can be obtained and spaces created for Mexico to be present and successful at the international level.  "If we dedicate ourselves to finding our common cause, and if each one contributes what they can and should, what they have, we can go very far," he emphasized.

For 170 years, world expos have stimulate cultural and economic exchanges between nations, shaping the world in which we live today. The expos open a window to the outside, so that nations can promote their culture, traditions and identity through their pavilions.

Mexico has participated with great success throughout the history of world expos, which have brought great economic and social benefits. The Mexico Pavilion will be located in the Mobility District and will have spaces that connect history, modern times and a proposal for the future of the country.  The pavilion has an area of 900 square meters, divided into three levels of 300 square meters each.

The main goal of the Mexico Pavilion is to give impetus to the country's economic reactivation and to re-launch the productive, tourist and cultural sectors, which have been affected by the COVID-19 public health crisis.

Secretary Clouthier said that the Economy Ministry will work hand in hand with the Foreign Ministry and the private sector, knocking on every door so that the exhibit is a success, and Mexico shows that the country's mobility is the result of everyone doing their respective job.

"As the Economy Ministry, we will have a space to bring SMEs to businesses that are beginning to open their wings to fly and enter this mobility we are talking about, and be able to grow their exports," she said.

According to data from the Economy Ministry, in 2020, the UAE was Mexico's 47th largest trading partner worldwide and 2nd among the countries of the Middle East. Last year, bilateral trade between the two nations totaled 705.1 million dollars (380.8 million dollars in Mexican exports and 324.4 million dollars in imports).

In his remarks, Tourism Secretary Torruco said that Expo 2020 Dubai is an important opportunity for demonstrating that Mexico is a country committed to the issues of sustainability, opportunity and mobility; "a Mexico committed to international cooperation; a Mexico willing to collectively address the global challenges demanded by the new reality."

He said that proof of this is the recent announcement by Emirates Airline that it would be resuming its four weekly flights to Mexico City via Barcelona on July 2.

Secretary Torruco said that the world expo will help trigger Mexico's economic reactivation and boost its productive, tourism and cultural sectors.

Culture Secretary Alejandra Frausto explained that Mexico would showcase its art, dance, music, cuisine, handicrafts and indigenous languages in the pavilion to bring its culture to the world.  "We have huge wings, as do all butterflies, which will be our symbol at this fair, and we have deep roots, which will also be evident in this space."

The extensive cultural program, which will be presented at a later date, will highlight the diversity that makes Mexico a cultural powerhouse. She expressed her appreciation for the cultural diplomacy done so that, after the impact of COVID-19 around the world, scenes such as these are now an opportunity for humanity to reunite.

The theme of the national pavilion is Mexico: flowers, travels and hospitality. It showcases our country as diverse, generous, creative, innovative and open to the world. The concept behind the pavilion is based on two deeply connected elements: Mexico's flowers and butterflies.

Lastly, Undersecretary Martha Delgado said, "because of the importance of the world expos in which Mexico has participated since their beginning, and because of the need to trigger economic reactivation and reinvigorate the productive, tourist and cultural sectors affected by the COVID-19 public health crisis, our country could not miss this event."

An agenda spanning 26 weeks is being finalized. It will include activities, conferences and the participation of artists, all promoting Mexico.  The events will be attended by government leaders and business groups, both local and international and from the other participating countries, and will promote Mexico's image as a powerhouse for tourism, investment and exports.
