- 1.75 million doses of the Moderna vaccine arrived from Memphis, Tennessee
- The donation demonstrates the strength of the bilateral relationship and the importance that both countries attach to cooperating to control the pandemic: Foreign Ministry
- A shipment of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine also arrived
This Tuesday, the Government of Mexico received 1,986,340 vaccine doses from the United States, of which 1.75 million are Moderna vaccines and 236,340 are Pfizer-BioNTech.
The Director General of Laboratorios de Biológicos y Reactivos de México (Birmex) S.A. de C.V., Pedro Zenteno, led the group of officials receiving the shipment, saying that it is the first part of a total of 3.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine donated by the United States government to Mexico, which shows "the high degree of collaboration between our two peoples."
The doses will be given in the metropolitan areas of Mexico City; Guadalajara, Jalisco; and Monterrey, Nuevo León to continue the National Vaccination Strategy, for which Mexico has acquired over 95 million doses, comprised of vaccines that have arrived from other nations and those fill-finished nationally.
The Birmex director general said that vaccination reduces the risk of serious illness and death from COVID-19, and he called on all those over 18 years of age to get vaccinated.
The Foreign Ministry's Chief Officer for North America, Roberto Velasco, said that the donation demonstrates the strength of the bilateral relationship and the importance that both countries attach to cooperating to control the pandemic.
He said that the Moderna vaccines expand the portfolio of vaccines available to Mexico to continue fighting the pandemic, and they give peace of mind to the 1.75 million people who will be vaccinated with the doses that arrived today.
He announced that another five million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will arrive in the first part of September, also donated by the United States government.
The Charge d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, David McCawley, said that, to date, the United States has donated more than 5.8 million doses of the Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines to Mexico.
He added that the pandemic has presented challenge after challenge. The Delta variant, for example, shows that we should not lower our guard and that the best way to prevent COVID-19 is by getting vaccinated.
The Director of Direct Relief Mexico, Eduardo Mendoza, and FedEx Mexico Vice President of Operations Jorge Luis Torres agreed that the shipment of vaccines is the result of the ties that unite both countries in facing the challenge of the pandemic.
The shipment of Moderna vaccines arrived at the Toluca international airport in the State of Mexico at 8:34 a.m. from Memphis, Tennessee.
The Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) granted emergency use authorization for the Moderna vaccine under the name of Spikevax on August 17. Birmex is responsible for importing these vaccines, which will be used as part of Mexico's vaccination strategy.
Also, at 8:26 a.m., 236,340 Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine doses arrived at the Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City on flight CVG MEX 952 from Cincinnati. Including today's shipment, Mexico has received a total of 28,015,845 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
Ninety-one members of the Mexican Army helped with the arrival, transfer and safety of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines.
Mexico has received 73,040,645 doses of vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Sinovac, the Gamaleya National Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology, CanSino, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna.
In addition, the Drugmex laboratory has fill-finished 6,348,310 doses of the CanSino vaccine, and the Liomont laboratory has fill-finished an additional 16,590,300 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, for a total of 22,938,610 doses of vaccines fill-finished nationally. Mexico's total vaccine supply to date has reached 95,979,255 vaccine doses.
As of today, there have been 115 shipments on 129 flights, as follows:
