• Seade highlighted his experience as chief negotiator of the new USMCA, as well as his career in multilateral organizations of the highest level.
  • He emphasized the North American character of his candidacy, as well as his commitment to impartiality and equidistance amongst all regions.

Dr Jesus Seade completed a work visit in Washington D.C. in which he presented his extensive experience and proposals to head the World Trade Organization, as part of the Government of Mexico’s multilateral mission. During his visit, which took place between August 17th and 20th, Seade held meetings with business organizations and chambers, U.S. Government representatives and authorities, and participated in specialized forums organized by think tanks and the civil society.

Being one of the cities with the largest presence of international organizations, Dr Seade's agenda in D.C. included various conversations and panels with international trade experts. Amongst these specialized instances, The Peterson Institute for International Economics, the Center for American Progress, the Wilson Center, and the US-Mexico Chamber of Commerce stand out.  During these forums, held under strict health protocols, Seade highlighted that the WTO is going through a crucial turning point, hence the need to renew its leadership with a candidate that has proven experience in political negotiations of international trade treaties and agreements, regardless of their place of origin or other types of quotas.

In that regard, Dr Seade emphasized his deep knowledge of the WTO, as the founding Deputy Director General of the Organization, as well as his experience as a senior official in both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. During his time in these organizations, Seade made multiple work visits, particularly to sub-Saharan Africa, to lead negotiations on the debt of developing countries as well as of those with low per capita income.

Different members of the diplomatic team at the Embassy, headed by Ambassador Martha Barcena, accompanied Dr. Seade in his meetings. Further, the Embassy’s vision and teamwork was fundamental to the success achieved in the work visit of Jesús Seade as the Government of Mexico’s candidate for WTO Director-General.
