The Foreign Ministry reports that today the Joint Declaration on the Convention establishing the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency (ALCE) was signed today at the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City as part of the commemoration of the 238th anniversary of the birth of the Liberator, Simón Bolívar.
Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and his counterparts from Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Paraguay, presented the Joint Declaration containing the draft Constitutive Convention of the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency to the foreign ministers attending the commemorative event.
The draft text was presented as a starting point for discussion by the countries of the region. The final document will be signed on September 18 in Mexico City, in the presence of the heads of state and government of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The regional agency will coordinate the space-related activities of its member countries. ALCE will promote the improvement of satellite communication systems, while boosting the region's ability to create maps of strengths, opportunities, threats, risks and vulnerabilities, among other tasks. All of this is particularly important in the context of climate change.
The Agency is an essential part of the opportunities represented by the exchange of and cooperation in scientific and technological knowledge in regional relations, and will help promote countries' development and the well-being of the people of Latin America and the Caribbean.
ALCE is an initiative supported by the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) through its Mexican Space Agency. It will help coordinate the application of space science and technology to our big shared challenges.
