Mr. President, thank you for the invitation to take part in this session of the Security Council.

We are at the meeting in accordance with Council rule 37, with a legitimate interest, because Venezuela is a sister nation.

Mexico reiterates its concern for the deterioration of the situation in Venezuela and we regret the loss of lives due to the most recent events.

We support the secretary-general's approach and statements to the effect that all the actors involved should "lower tensions, pursue every effort" to avoid an escalation of the conflict, and reject any type of violence.

Mr. President, there are avenues for dialogue and conciliation that uphold respect for human rights that must be exhausted. Mexico would like to take this opportunity to call for a search for a peaceful and democratic solution to the complex panorama facing Venezuela.

The Venezuelan people must be the ones who choose their own course without interference. In line with a long diplomatic tradition, Mexico is confident that a negotiated solution based on dialogue among all parties involved exists, including the options in Chapter 6 of the Charter.

Therefore, the governments of Mexico and Uruguay have proposed new inclusive and credible negotiations with full respect for the rule of law and human rights.

We reiterate our full support, commitment and willingness to work together for the stability, wellbeing and peace of the Venezuelan people.

Thank you.
