Mexico's consulates in the United States held their eleventh Labor Rights Week from August 26 to September 2 as part of the Labor Day celebrations in the U.S. Labor Rights Week has become one of the most important events for providing Mexicans in the United States with information to better understand and protect their labor rights. This year, the theme was “The value of your work.”

Mexico's 50 consulates in the United States and Puerto Rico hosted events for over 82,000 people.  980 events were organized with 606 federal, state and local labor officials, in addition to state agencies, unions and non-governmental organizations. About 45,000 people attended events in person, while more than 60,000 people followed the event through social networks.

Consulates from seven additional countries also participated:  Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Argentina.

Over the course of the week, 516 cases needing consular protection were referred to lawyers and consular staff for assistance. Several consulates visited employers to provide protective services at the workplace.

To better assist Mexican workers, the consulates signed 32 collaboration agreements with U.S. labor authorities on occupational safety, health and organizational rights, among others.  Eight more agreements on labor issues were signed with non-governmental organizations.

The Government of Mexico commends the important contributions made by Mexican workers to both the United States and Mexico.  The office of the Undersecretary for North America and Mexico's embassy and consulates in the U.S. have made it a priority to promote and ensure their labor rights.
