• The Foreign Secretary inaugurates a space dedicated to Mexico in Doha; the event is attended by Qatari authorities and hundreds of Mexican fans

The Mexican avocado has arrived in time for the 2022 Soccer World Cup. Beginning today, Mexico will export avocados to Qatar.

The first shipment of Hass avocado comes from a small business in Tacámbaro, Michoacán, David's Avocados, with the help and advice of Corporativo La Viña. This shipment of avocados is the first in the trade relationship between Mexico and Qatar.  Starting in late November, imports are expected to reach 15 tons a week.

This export project was made possible thanks to the support of the Foreign Ministry and the Mexico-Qatar Business Council.

“I want you to know that today we have good news. The first shipment of avocados has arrived from Michoacan. What you see here, what we call guacamole, represents Mexico around the world, because how are we going to go to a World Cup without guacamole?" said Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard.

Mexican space opens in Doha

Beginning today, the Katara Village Cultural Foundation in Doha, the cultural heart of the capital of Qatar, has a public space dedicated to Mexico.

The Foreign Secretary unveiled two sculptures, an oryx and a humpback whale, by Mexican artist Rodrigo Solórzano. They are a contribution and symbol of friendship with Qatar and the Katara Foundation, which provided an area to the Foreign Ministry for the Qatar 2022 Mexico Center. Mexico is the only country with an operation of this type in Qatar.

"We are gathered here today in this space that is dedicated to Mexico, to Mexicans, and we want to thank the authorities that have allowed us to do so," said the Foreign Secretary. “This mural will be a meeting point and source of identity for Mexicans, not only during the World Cup, because we will leave a reminder of our presence after the World Cup… Here is its artist, who is promoting it all over the world. And these sculptures are also dedicated to biodiversity."

The sculptures, and the mural by Eva Bracamontes, are located in Katara Square and reflect the biodiversity of both countries.

The opening of this space dedicated to Mexico is part of the initiative launched by the Foreign Ministry early this year in which its diplomatic offices abroad establish and identify public spaces that represent Mexico through urban art, homages, sculptures, mural painting and other elements inspired by our culture and traditions.
