On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry respectfully and fraternally calls on President Nicolás Maduro's government to suspend convening the National Constituent Assembly and to open the door to negotiations that lead to a resolution of the serious democratic crisis in Venezuela.

The popular consultation held on Sunday, July 16 confirmed the deep polarization of the Venezuelan people. The outcome of the consultation makes it clear that convening a National Constituent Assembly would only exacerbate the division and the violence that has already cost the lives of more than a hundred people. The Venezuelan government and President Maduro have a historic opportunity to pave the way for reconciliation and peace by reconsidering the convening of the Constituent Assembly and creating the conditions for beginning a genuine process of political negotiation among all Venezuelans.

The Mexican government makes this appeal while reiterating that it is wholly willing to support through diplomatic channels any sincere effort to find a negotiated, peaceful and democratic solution that fully respects the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people.
